The Letters to Herself

The Seasons Within: A Journey to Stillness - Chapter 6

(Theme: Self-Compassion & Letting Go of Expectations)

Leila sat at the wooden table, staring at a blank page in her journal. The fire crackled beside her, filling the cabin with warmth, but she still felt a lingering chill inside.

She had spent the last few days peeling back layers of herself—memories, emotions, old fears. And now, something was asking to be written.

But where did she begin?

She took a deep breath, steadying herself. Then, slowly, she wrote:

"Dear Leila,"

She paused, pressing the tip of the pen against the page, hesitating.

How did one write to themselves?

What did she need to hear?

She closed her eyes, listening.

And the words came.

Unraveling Expectations

"You have spent so long trying to be enough—chasing perfection, proving your worth, carrying the weight of expectations that were never truly yours to bear."

"But what if you don’t have to? What if you are already whole?"

The words made her pause.

She had never allowed herself to believe that before.

Her entire life had been shaped by effort—working harder, pushing further, always reaching for the next thing. And yet, here, in the quiet of the mountains, she was beginning to realize:

She was exhausted from the chase.

And for what?

Hadn’t she already proven enough?

Wasn’t she already enough?

She exhaled, pressing forward.

"You don’t have to be perfect to be worthy. You don’t have to know all the answers to be complete. You don’t have to keep running to deserve rest."

"You are enough. As you are. Right now."

Releasing the Weight

Leila put the pen down, staring at the words.

They felt foreign.

They felt true.

She ran her fingers over the ink, as if trying to press the message into herself.

How long had she carried the belief that she wasn’t enough? That she had to earn love, earn rest, earn her place in the world?

She had never realized how heavy it was.

Until now.

She folded the page, holding it in her hands.

Then, with quiet reverence, she walked to the fireplace.

She hesitated only for a moment before letting the paper slip into the flames.

The fire caught quickly, curling the edges, turning words into embers.

She watched as the letter burned, the weight of its message turning to light.

A release.

A beginning.

She pressed a hand to her heart, feeling the rise and fall of her breath.

For the first time in a long time, she didn’t feel like she had something to prove.

She just was.

And that was enough.

Mindfulness Practice: Writing a Letter to Yourself

Tonight, take a moment to write to yourself.

  • Find a quiet space. Take a deep breath.
  • Begin with “Dear [your name],”
  • Write what you need to hear. Not what you should say, but what your heart is asking for.
  • It might be a message of encouragement. A release of fear. A reminder of your worth.
  • Let the words flow. Without judgment. Without expectation.
  • When you finish, read it back to yourself. Let the words sink in.

And if you’re ready—release it.

Burn it. Bury it. Let the wind carry it away.

Or keep it close, as a reminder:

You are already whole.

Leila watched the last of the ashes fade into the firelight.

Outside, the snow had started to fall again.

And inside, she felt lighter than she had in years.
