Frost and Reflection
The Seasons Within: A Journey to Stillness - Chapter 3
(Theme: Finding Beauty in the Stillness)
Leila woke to the soft golden light of morning slipping through the cabin window. The fire in the hearth had burned down to embers, and a familiar chill hung in the air. She pulled the quilt tighter around her shoulders, reluctant to leave the warmth of her bed just yet.
Outside, the world was silent under its frozen mantle, the snow reflecting the first light of dawn in a way that made everything look untouched—pristine, as if the earth itself had decided to start over.
For the first time since arriving, Leila didn’t immediately feel the need to move. Instead, she simply lay there, watching the light shift on the wooden ceiling beams, listening to the small creaks of the cabin settling around her.
She had expected solitude to feel suffocating. Instead, it was beginning to feel like an invitation.
The Beauty in the Frost
After breakfast—simple toast and tea—Leila pulled on her coat and stepped outside.
The world sparkled.
Every branch, every blade of grass peeking from the snow was coated in frost, turning the forest into a crystalline wonderland. The sunlight caught on the ice, sending tiny rainbows dancing across the landscape.
She exhaled, watching her breath cloud in the air, and for the first time in a long time, she really looked.
Not just at the forest, but at the way winter held onto it so gently. The way the frost wasn’t something dead, but something beautiful. The way stillness could carry its own quiet magic.
She reached out and touched a branch, her gloved fingers grazing the delicate ice crystals. They melted almost instantly, dissolving at her warmth. It struck her then—how temporary everything was. How fleeting, how precious.
All the moments she had rushed through, all the beauty she had ignored in her hurry to do more.
What else had she missed?
A Forgotten Reflection
Back inside, Leila pulled out her journal. This time, she didn’t hesitate.
"I used to think winter was empty. A space between things. But today, I saw how full it is—of quiet, of beauty, of things I never noticed before. Maybe stillness isn’t about waiting for something to happen. Maybe it’s about seeing what’s already here."
She set the pen down, feeling a small weight lift from her chest.
She wasn’t sure she had all the answers yet. But she was starting to understand the questions.
Mindfulness Practice: Seeing with New Eyes
Today, take a moment to pause and really look at something around you—something you usually overlook.
- Maybe it’s the way sunlight filters through your window.
- Maybe it’s the sound of the wind outside.
- Maybe it’s the way your breath moves in and out, steady, constant.
Whatever it is, give it your full attention. See it as if you’re seeing it for the first time.
Because sometimes, the smallest things hold the biggest truths.
Leila closed her journal and looked out the window once more. The frost was still there, glimmering in the morning light.
A reminder.
There was so much more to see.
And for the first time in a long while, she was ready to notice.
